St. John’s Freedom Award Recipient
The 2011 Department of Defense Freedom Award recipients were announced and St. John’s Lutheran Church of Yankton, South Dakota was one of 15 recipients of that year’s award! The Freedom Award is the DoD’s highest recognition given to employers for exceptional support of their employees serving in the Guard and Reserve. St. John’s Lutheran Church stood out among a field of 4,049 nominations submitted by Guard and Reserve service members or their families.
This is a great honor for St. John’s Lutheran Church. The 2011 honorees were recognized in Washington, D.C. at the 16th annual Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award Ceremony on September 22, 2011. As of 2011, since 1996, only 145 employers have been presented with the Freedom Award. St. John’s was the first church in the nation to ever receive the award. Recipients met privately with Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta prior to the ceremony.
